every. day.

"... if I could give you just one gift ever for the rest of your life it would be this. Confidence. It would be the gift of confidence. Either that or a scented candle.”
― David NichollsOne Day

I love that quote.  When you think about it, the gifts we really want to give to the people we love are intangible. They're the things we would give to them over and over -- the gift of love, the gift of joy, the gift of confidence, the gift of peace... all the things that won't fit in a box or cute gift bag.  Things you want them to have every. day.

But, being mere mortals, all we can do is love each other and try to show it the best way we can.  So, we give gifts -- the kind that actually can fit in a box or gift bag -- such as... a scented candle.   Like it or not, gift giving season is rapidly approaching.  Here are a few of our all time favorites to give and receive.

Handmade gift tags with the sweetest sentiments.

Velvet Pumpkins...Who knew?

Initial Necklaces in gold or silver

Handmade Hoop Earrings

Mustard Seed Charms

Geodes.  Kudos to the grandmother who bought all of these for her grandkids with
a note attached, "you're most beautiful on the inside."

Dang proud to be from Tennessee

And there's always these....

Little things can make big statements.  Argentine poet Antonio Porchio said, "I know what I have given you.  I do not know what you have received."   I hope it's love -- always love.
every. day.

This post is dedicated to Mary Lee Bunch.  She was a gift to so many families, including my own.  Thank you, Mary Lee.  You will be missed.  May God grant you eternal love and peace.

Antlers, hides, trophies...

Blame it on Ralph Lauren.  Ever since I saw his Alpine Lodge collection, I have been obsessed with antlers, hides and trophy mounts.  Then I went to Montana this past February and oh... my...goodness!  While I can't say that I'm a fan of traditional mountain decor, I do love me some white on white tones with fur, antlers and navajo blankets scattered about.. We will be getting lots of blankets and hides come late September.  In the meantime, here's some inspiration...

Reindeer hides, soft white palette, wood and charcoal accents.  Love.

 Calm, beautiful Scandanavian style.

Antlers in an urn and a dead stick.  Hmmm.  Still love it.

The photograph that sent me on my now year long quest to find the perfect bison trophy.

This painted antler thing that's all over pinterest is just cool.

and the collection that started it all.  Oh Ralph.  You're killing me.

Rough Luxe

Well, isn't that the truth?  That's never more true than in the rough luxe design aesthetic that's so popular right now.  Rough luxe is inspired by cultivated chaos, patina and heritage. It's not about what we can afford.  It's about reflecting our soul.  And it's gorgeous!  We think you'll agree.

The Ace Hotel by Roman and Williams

All three of the above photos are work by Robin Standefer and Stephen Alesch, founders of
Roman and Williams Buildings and Interiors.
This image is via pinterest.

By the way, we can totally help you out if you want some new old stuff to go with your version of rough luxe design.

Books

Can I tell you what one of my biggest fears is?  It's that someday book publishers will stop publishing books.  I mean, who could blame them?  Ipads, tablets and E-readers are pretty cool.  But I love books.  In fact, my husband and I have so many books that I have begun to just stack them on the floor.   Some of my stacks have even turned into tables.

When I've finished reading a paperback book, I can't bear to donate or recycle it.  I turn it into altered art or I use the pages as backgrounds for paintings.  Sometimes I rip out pages and put them in cloches or I rip off the covers and tie several books in a stack and use them as decoration.

I'm not nearly as hard on my design books. I constantly flip through them for inspiration. I stick post it notes to the best pages. I take pictures of the pictures and text them to friends who need inspiration.  Most design books really are works of art.  The photos are beautiful, the design elements inspiring and the heft!  Design books make the best coffee table books.  Who wants an E-reader sitting on their table?  There's no art in that.

We are stocking some of the best books right now. Here are some of my favorites:

Think "salty and sweet" only applied to design

Your home as your sanctuary
Inspiration and aspiration
Great style and a very nice lady
Iconic design and style
Check out these gorgeous coffee table books...

Beautiful portraits of the equine sort

Unbelievable Birds and amazing photography

Our books are always 15% off the publishers list price, so stock up!

Yesterday you said tomorrow

Sometimes I think that if my children ever had to sum up my life as a mom it might be the title of this post.  "Yesterday you said tomorrow." We're all guilty of living that motto every now and then, (sometimes more now than then).   So we didn't get to the zoo like I said...  we didn't have time to stop for milkshakes... we didn't make it to the mall before it closed.  Of course, that was when my kids were little, nowadays the apologies involve money.  "Sorry... I didn't transfer money to your account...I didn't cash your check... I forgot to leave you gas money."  Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.  The opportunities to mess up are endless.

We forget.  We have too many things taking up space in our brain.  We'll try to be better, right?  No point in beating ourselves up over it.  We're busy people.  So we all get a pass as far as I'm concerned.  But you know what is the one thing we don't get to take a pass on?  It's gratitude.  I found a quote a long time ago that made me gasp.  "What if you woke up today with only the things you thanked God for yesterday?" Oh my.  What if?

So in honor of Thanksgiving and just in case it ever becomes an issue, I want to say thank you to...

Vignette's wonderful, beautiful and inspiring customers.  I don't think there has ever been a day since we opened two years ago that I have not felt deeply blessed by the support you have given us.  We opened with a bang and it has not slowed down since.  Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Dianne, Emily, Lori and Pam -- the "shop girls".  Gosh.  You all are the best and you are adored.

Marybeth for jumping in feet first.  Your kind's my kind.

Sean for the awesome store playlists. "If music be the food of love, play on..."(quote by Shakespeare, philosophy by Sean).

Nannette and Madeline for being such awesome neighbors.  Mississippi girls totally rock.

Finally...This is the most incredible community and we serve the best customers.  You inspire us to do more, be more and bring you more.  As Audrey Hepburn once said, "you are the hippest of cats..." Thank you friends.

Autumn

Admit it.  You can't wait for Autumn.   The weather is finally cooling down, the kids are back in school and nature brings about a spectacular show of color and beauty.  Time to think about cozy scarves, gloves and blankets.  Time to light a fire or candle and immerse ourselves in the richness of the season.

Around here, Autumn means our store is brimming with all the fabulous finds from market season.

Wanna peak at some of the things that are on their way?

All of these and more are due in from
Noir any day now!

Then there's our favorite faux fur
blankets coming in October.

and our super soft rosebud blankets -- coming back by popular demand.

The cutest pottery line, I think I've ever seen...

Talk about old school... how about a chalkboard message tablet?

and because the English major in me couldn't walk away without ordering these...

necklaces that are books!! with real pages!!

There's so much on its way, I couldn't possibly share it all. Oh! and the clothes!  Boxes and boxes! You are just going to have to come in and see for yourself.

September 11

Normal day, let me be aware of the treasure you are.
Let me learn from you, love you, bless you before you depart.
Let me not pass you by in quest of some rare and perfect tomorrow.
Let me hold you while I may, for it may not always be so.
One day I shall dig my nails into the earth, or bury my face in the pillow, or stretch myself taut, or raise my hands to the sky and want, more than all the world, your return.
~Mary Jean Irion

I will be thinking about Tuesday, September 11, 2001 on this Tuesday, September 11, 2012.  I will also be thinking about the lovely survivors who guided my tour at the World Trade Center Memorial and Freedom Tower construction site this past February.  Because they asked me not to forget about their friends and colleagues who stayed behind in Tower 2 on that day.  The friends and colleagues they still cried about, eleven years later.  And I did too.
